PURPOSE:To remove clogging, to enable recording at high speed and to prevent recording under the state of the use-up of ink by providing an ink presence detecting means detecting the presence of ink in a thermal head section with a heating element and an operation control section receiving a signal from the ink detecting means. CONSTITUTION:Elements 109, 112 as ink presence detecting means 144 are attached at both ends of the row of heating elements 3 for a thermal head 1, the heating elements 3 are heated when there is no ink 4, and the damage of the heating elements 3 due to no-water boiling is prevented. A replenishing- ink presence detecting means 145 consisting of a LED 75 for detecting ink and a photosensor 76 for detecting ink is mounted to an ink vessel 64. Recording paper 8 is fed toward the heating elements 3 only when the detecting signal of the presence of ink in the thermal head 1 and the detecting signal of the presence of ink in the ink vessel 64 are generated simultaneously. Accordingly, the suspension of the operation of recording due to the expiration of ink 4 during recording can be prevented. |
