The supply system for an automobile uses a starter battery (2) coupled to the starter motor (3) and an on-board supply battery (5) supplying the on-board electrical loads. The connection between the starter battery and the onboard supply battery is interrupted when the latter battery would drain the charge from the starter battery. Pref. the starter battery and the starter motor are separated from the remainder of the electrical supply network via a starter battery switch (7). ADVANTAGE - Ensures starter battery has sufficient charge for operation of starter motor.
