A detector for measuring a magnetic field contains a magnetorestrictive foil (2) whose dimensions change in the field. The foil forms one electrode of a capacitor (1) whose other electrode (3) is opposite it at a distance which varies with the field, thus varying the capacitance. The foil and the other electrode are arranged circular cylindrically coaxial to each other. The other electrode can be mounted on a non-magnetic, electrically insulating circular cylinder (4), e.g. of glass. USE/ADVANTAGE - Foil distance variations are electrically evaluated without attaching light conducting fibre or component to foil to transfer dimensional changes.
