The change-speed gear is for a bicycle or any other machine driven by muscle power. It can provide ten or more speed ratios. The change speed gear consists of two parallel shafts (1,2) with each shaft carrying a stack of sprockets. The first shaft (1) is driven by a sprocket (11) and a sprocket (15) on the second shaft (2) drives the road wheel of the bicycle or other machine. The sprockets are arranged with increasing numbers of teeth in one direction on the first shaft whilst the sprockets are arranged in the opposite way on the second shaft. The sum of the teeth of any two sprockets lying in the same plane is constant. A chain drive passing around two such sprockets is transferred to an adjacent pair to change speed.
