A radiation source and a detector are fitted for reflected radiation from the car environments. On a projection surface, orthogonal to the radiation direction, the laser beam has an elongated cross section with greater height than width. The lower boundary lies in the min. measuring distance, while the top boundary lies in the max. one. Pref. the ratio of length to width of the laser beam impinging onto the projection surface is between two and three. Several such layer beams may be transmitted in a flat configuration to lie next to each other in the projection surface. Two beam bundles, each of several beams, are transmitted such that they do not overlap in the irradiated space. USE/ADVANTAGE - Scanning and detecting obstacles in bad visibility and ascertaining distance with low radiation energy but large surveyed range.
