PURPOSE:To improve thermal fatigue resistance of a piston head as well as to attempt an reduction in weight without degrading resistance to wear of a ring groove by making the periphery of a combustion chamber around a piston head and a portion including the ring groove out of ceramic whiskers. CONSTITUTION:In the piston head 3 of a piston 1 having a many-sided combustion chamber 2, the periphery of the chamber 2 and a portion including a ring groove 4 is made out of fiber reinforced composite metal which combines aluminum alloy as a matrix with reinforced ceramic whiskers such as silicon carbide and the like or short fibers. Owing to this constitution, thermal fatigue resistance of the piston head is improved, furthermore, the piston can be reduced in weight as compared with the internal chill made of Ni-resist cast iron. |
