A device has a horizontal conveyor (1) upon which the glass panes (4) are transported, supported by a supporting device (2) which defines with its supporting front face a glass pane running plane (3), a tool (18) for working on the glass panes (4) along their edges and a drive motor for moving the tool (18) in a direction parallel to the glass pane running plane (3) and transverse to the transport direction (5). In order to control the displacement of the tool (18), electronic line scanning cameras (8) are oriented in relation to the glass pane running plane (3) in such a way that the scanning lines that lie on the glass pane running plane or that are parallel thereto extend in a perpendicular direction to the transport direction (5). In order to measure the conveying distance, a displacement sensor (15) synchronized with the horizontal conveyor (1) is provided. The signals from the line scanning cameras (8) and from the displacement sensor (15) are supplied to an evaluating computer (16) which controls the tool (18).
