PURPOSE:To stabilize polyacetylene useful as an electrically conductive high polymer, etc., by bringing acetylene gas into contact with a Ziegler Natta cata lyst and washing the resultant solid polyacetylene with a solvent containing a ketone and hydrocarbon. CONSTITUTION:Acetylene gas is initially brought into contact with a Ziegler Natta catalyst to form polyacetylene. After stopping the reaction, the resultant solid polymer is then washed with a solvent containing a ketone, preferably acetylacetone, etc., and a hydrocarbon. A catalyst consisting of a titanic acid ester and an organoaluminum compound containing no halogen is preferred for the Ziegler Natta catalyst. A method for mixing the polymer with the above- mentioned mixed solvent and N2 atmosphere and keeping the polymer under irradiation with ultrasonic waves for 15min-12hr, carrying out the washing operation several times and finally washing the polymer with only hydrocarbon is preferred as the method for washing the polymer.
