PURPOSE: To plainly display characters such as a cursor, character, etc., by setting the density data of a character by a look-up table based on the density data in the environs of the character. CONSTITUTION:The density data of the areas around the character to be written in of the original picture stored in a picture memory 1 is inputted to a processor 5 for picture data processing to obtain the average value of the density data. Then the output density value of this average value is obtained as referring to the loolk-up table LUT 2. Such a value as having the maximum difference A value whose difference with the output data obtained by means of the LUT 2 is obtained, and an input data corresponding to said value is determined as a character density data, and this data is written within the form of the character in the memory 1. Accordingly, since the character data which maximally contrasts with the density of the picture elements around the character is written in the picture memory l, a plain display is attained.
