The invention relates to a device for controlling an inverter connected to a multiphase load. It comprises in combination: - means 12 for comparing the value of the current in each phase of the load with a set-point value, - means 14 for formulating, on the basis of the results of the comparisons, the values of the logic variables for controlling the contactors of the inverter, - means 13 for formulating, also on the basis of the results of the comparisons, the value of a free wheel logic variable, - means 15 for transmitting to the contactors of the inverter the said values of the logic variables for control when the free wheel logic variable possesses a first value, and for imposing a free wheel configuration upon the contactors when the free wheel logic variable possesses a second value. <IMAGE>
