VALVING TECHNIQUE To reduce the amount of inert gas wasted during arc welding, the inert gas flowing through a conduit to the tip of the welding torch is blocked or released at a first location in the conduit by a solenoid controlled valve and regulated at a second location in the conduit with a precision flow rate regulator with a tolerance of at least 1 1/2 cubic inches per hour. The dead space between the solenoid controlled valve and the flow rate regulator is less than 4 cubic feet. The regulator is setable at any of a plurality of positions representing flow rates of inert gas. |
