MINERAL AGGREGATE RESISTANT TO REACTION WITH BASE AND METHOD FOR SUPPRESSING BASE-AGGREGATE REACTION

PURPOSE:To improve the durability of cured cement and to prevent the contamination of concrete by contacting the surface of an alkali-reactive mineral aggregate with ozone in the presence of water, thereby modifying and stabilizing the surface structure of the aggregate. CONSTITUTION:A silicate aggregate reactive with alkali component (e.g. pyroxene andesite) is immersed in ozonized water (having a concentration of usually 0.05-2%) or sprayed with ozonized water to modify the reactive site of the aggregate and prevent the alkali-aggrefate reaction. The cracking, breakage, contamination, etc., of concrete caused by the formation of silica gel can be prevented by the use of the aggregate.
