PURPOSE:To obtain the title packing material suitable for holding the refractory members for lining molten metal containers by incorporating a subsidiary raw material of specific composition in the main raw material comprising a refractory raw material, clay, metallic powder and powdery binder followed by molding. CONSTITUTION:(A) 100 pts.wt. of the main raw material comprising (1) 70-97 wt.% of a refractory raw material (e.g. silicon carbide), (2) 1-10 wt.% of clay, (3) 1-10 wt.% of metallic powder (e.g. ferrosilicon), and (4) 1-20 wt.% of a powdery binder (e.g. pitch powder) is incorporated with (B) a subsidiary raw material comprising (5) 1-8 pts.wt. of a carbonaceous raw material (e.g. carbon black), (6) 1-10 pts.wt. of a boride (e.g. borax), (7) 1-5 pts.wt. of a fibrous raw material (e.g. hemp), (8) 30-40 pts.wt. of a vinyl acetate-water emulsion, (9) 1-8 pts.wt. of dibutyl phthalate, (10) 5-20 pts.wt. of granular glass, and (11) 1-20 pts.wt. of water. The mixture is then kneaded and molded, thus obtaining the objective packing material. On absorbing expansion, the present material will increase in its mechanical strength and exert binding force higher than that for mortar. |
