PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst enhanced in the total selectivity of methacrolein and methacrylic acid by incorporating mixed oxide of vandium and phosphorus wherein the mol ratio of phosphorus to vanadium is specified and a surface area is a definite value or less into the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Mixed oxide of vanadium such as vanadium pentoxide and phosphorus such as ortho phosphoric acid wherein the mol ratio of phosphorus to vanadium is 1.0 - 2.8, pref., 1.0 - 2.5, more pref., 1.2 - 2.0 and a surface area is 10 m<2>/g or less, pref., 0.5 - 8 m<2>/g, more pref., 1 - 5 m<2>/g is used. The catalyst thus obtained is used for producing methacrolein and methacrylic acid with high total selectivity when isobutylene or tertiary butanol is oxidized. |
