The invention described relates to a method serving to diagnose and interactively command the status of remote fax machines which are communicating with fax machines of after-sales service centres with the aid of a non-standard format recommended by the standards of the CCITT, by reading or writing data in the memory. The system for remote control of remote fax machines requires that the telephone number of a remote fax machine be input after having checked that the remote control mode has been set up when a function key is pressed, and forms a check to establish whether memory read and write modes have been selected. Next, the system determines whether a remote diagnosis operation, a name recording operation, a telephone number recording operation and an options read operation have been selected respectively. If the above modes have been selected respectively, each of the modes is executed, and the results are then printed. However, if the options read operation has not been selected, the memory read operation is selected for the purpose of repeatedly executing the above operations. <IMAGE>
