The invention relates to a diffusion pump including a cylindrical body (1) at the base (4) of which there is a vessel (7) containing a working liquid and a plate (8) intended to form a film of this liquid. This plate is in thermal contact with a heating device (12) providing the evaporation of the liquid, and is orientated towards the inlet orifice of a steam pipe (6) mounted in the body (1) and communicating with a spacing (13) formed between its external surface and the body (1), this spacing (13) communicating with one of the chambers (26) of a hydraulic seal, the other chamber (27) communicating with the vessel (7) in order to allow condensate to arrive directly at the plate (8). The invention applies particularly to the creation and maintaining of a vacuum characterised by a residual depression of gas of from 10<-1> to 10<-7> Pa. <IMAGE>
