The process consists in treating the surface of the documents with formaldehyde in vapour form at a temperature of the order of 15 to 30 DEG C with a moisture content of between 40 and 80 %. A device for application comprises an enclosure (2) which, being intended to contain the documents to be treated, is equipped with a support (16) for the documents, a trough (3) for the formaldehyde, heating means (27), a refrigeration device (25), an air circulation fan (23) and a cycle programmer.
