The device comprises a lower horizontal board 4 which can move in terms of translation on rails 2 carried by the platform 1. On the board 4 can slide a board 13 the displacement of which, simultaneous to that of the board 4, is controlled by an endless chain 10 running over pinions 19 pointing in a horizontal plane and carried so that they can rotate freely by the board 4. On one side, the chain 7 is attached to a fixed point 11 and on the other side it is connected to the board 13 such that, when the board 4 is displaced by the distance d, the board 13 is displaced by 2d. Similarly, the board 13 carries, so that they can rotate freely, two pinions 14 located horizontally, and over which there runs an endless chain 15 connected on one side to the board 4 and, on the other side, to a central board 18. Thus, when the board 4 is displaced by d, the board 18 is simultaneously displaced by 3d. Fixed to the board 18 is a plate acting as a support for the trays to be handled. The device makes it possible to grasp all sorts of trays without exhibiting significant vertical bulk. <IMAGE>
