In a process for monitoring of the catalytic activity of a catalyst in the exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine (3), a measured value of is temperature derived from signals generated by at least two temperatures probes (4, 5, 6) connected to the catalyst (1). The measured value of temperature is either observed over a long period of time in order to derive a mean value, taking into account a plurality of operating conditions of the internal combustion engine (3), or reduced to an expression independent of the particular operating condition, taking into account other measured values which are obtained by means of an engine-monitoring system (7) and which characterize the corresponding operating condition of the internal combustion engine (3). The measured value of temperature is then compared with a predetermined limit value. If the measured value of temperature is less than the limit value, a message indicating a defect of the catalyst (1) is sent to the display.
