The use of a compound of general formula (I') or a salt thereof in treating osteoporosis and a novel compound included in the above compound, wherein the ring X' represents benzene or pyridine; Y represents oxygen or sulfur; Z' represents a single bond, alkylene, alkenylene, alkynylene or NR<5>, wherein R<5> represents hydrogen, alkyl, acyl, optionally substituted aralkyl or a group which forms a nitrogenous heterocyclic ring together with R<4>'; R<1> and R<2> represent each hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy, cyano, haloalkyl, carboxyl, optionally alkyl-substituted amino, optionally alkyl-substituted carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl, optionally substituted phenyl, nitro, acyl, optionally alkyl-substituted sulfamoyl, alkylthio, arylthio, alkylsulfinyl, arylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, aryloxy, aralkyloxy, hydroxyalkyl, acyloxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, optionallly alkyl-substituted aminoalkyl or acylaminoalkyl, or alternatively R<1> and R<2> may be combined together to represent optionally substituted alkylene, alkylenedioxy or a benzene ring; R<3> represents hydroxy, acyloxy, alkoxy, optionally alkyl-substituted aminoalkoxy, alkylsulfonylamino, optionally alkyl-substituted aminoalkylsulfonylamino or arylsulfonylamino; and R<4>' represents hydrogen, alkyl, optionally substituted aralkyl, an optionally substituted aromatic group or an optionally substituted heteroaromatic group.
