<p>An apparatus and method for removing one of a plurality of immiscible liquid phases from a vessel (17) is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a floating plate (11) having an overall density between that of the densities of the immiscible liquid phases (15 and 16) and a drain hose (13) having one end attached to one side of the floating plate (11) and its other end in communication with the exterior of the vessel. In use, the floating plate continually positions itself at the interface between the immiscible liquid phases (15 and 16) by floating on the heavier liquid phase (16). Thereafter, one phase may be skimmed off and removed from the vessel by use of an external pump. The apparatus is particularly useful in removing a contaminating aqueous phase from a desired organic phase when the interfacial line between the phases varies significantly over time.</p> |
