Paint stripper compsn. comprises (i) 2-40 % non-polar solvents such as benzene derivs., aliphatic and/or naphthenic hydrocarbons, (ii) 10-90 % polar solvents such as chlorohydrocarbon-free esters, ketones, glycols, alcohols, glycol ethers and glycol esters and (iii) 1-25 % of a thickening agent comprising a mixt. of an inorganic structuring agent such as bentonite, micronised clays, perlite or finely dispersed silicic acid and a paraffin/wax dispersion. The compsn. opt. contain up to 1.5% of a cellulose ether to further increase the newtonian viscosity of the compsn.: 0.1 - 3 % of an anionic, cationic and/or nonionic surfactant to facilitate washing off of the stripped paint; and up to 12 % water to improve the hydrophilic properties of the compsn. USE/ADVANTAGE - The combination thickening agent gives strong stable thickening of the compsn. whilst allowing easy application to the paint to be stripped, and gives a gel which is resistant to breakdown and phase sepn. in use.
