Reversible flow filter for coarse contamination, partic. in heat exchanger cooling water, has a rotationally symmetrical screen element, positioned coaxially within the cooling water line and over its whole cross section. The screen is concave, as a spherical section, and a back-washing rotor is positioned below it, with a curved suction orifice. Along a meridianal arc of the filter, a curved collection and discharge trough is inserted. ADVANTAGE - Very coarse contamination is removed, without interrupting operation.
