Aq. coating compsn. for cathodic electrodeposition comprises (A) a binder consisting of an amino gp.-contg. polymerisation, polycondensation or polyaddition prod. which is water dilutable after protonisation with an acid, (B) a crosslinking agent and (C) 0.05-10 wt.% w.r.t. (A)+(B) of a low mol. wt. organic complex former (I). Claimed (I) are aromatic cpds. with at least two (same or different) N-, O- or S- atoms or aromatic heterocyclic cpds. with N-, O- or S- atoms in the ring, esp. heterocycles with at most two hetero atoms in the ring. Pref. complex formers are derivs. of imidazole or derivs. of thiazole.
