PURPOSE:To facilitate an easy timing of measurement in a short time and to ensure a derection of potential without receiving no effect of the leakage caused by packaging and the humidity, by securing a parallel connection for the resistance to a voltmeter to perform a measurement of potential or a potential measurement circuit. CONSTITUTION:For a measurement of potential of a colored electrode corresponding to the concentration of display, a display electrode having an EC layer 3 formed on a transparent substrate 2 incorporating a transparent electrode 1 and a counter electrode having an EC layer 6 formed on an electrode 5 on a substrate 4 of glass or the like are provided opposite to each other. A voltmeter or voltage measuring circuit is provided between the electrode 1 and 5, and a semiconductor element having a resistance and a switch or a switch function is provided in parallel to the voltmeter or the voltage measuring circuit. The reference electrode is put under a discoloring state (connected to a high voltage) to measure the potential of the EC layer 6. The reference electrode is cut off from a high potential, and a switch is connected for a time T1 and then cut off. Then after a time T2, the potential is measured between the electrode 5 to be measured and the reference electrode 1. |
