PURPOSE:To improve screen brightness and to carry on auxiliary discharge without a resetting cathode by scanning the upper and lower parts of a display panel individually and reciprocally at the same time and apply dummy scanning pulses. CONSTITUTION:Upper and lower cathode driving parts 6 and 7 receive scanning pulses SP, erasure pulses EP, and a shift clock from a driving pulse generation part 3 and the driving part 6 combines the pulses SP and EP to make a shift at a horizontal period H, reciprocate repeatedly between the uppermost part and division part of the display panel, and applies the dummy scanning pulses QP to cathodes C1 and Cn2 of the division part line of the uppermost line as a return point in a main discharge maintenance period after returning to carry on the auxiliary discharge. The output of the driving part 7 reciprocates between cathodes Cn2+1 and Cn of the division part and uppermost line similarly. Consequently, a panel illumination time is made long and the screen brightness is improved. |
