The mechanism actuates the sliding poppet valve of a piston engine. It has two electromagnets excited alternately to move an armature to and fro in opposition to a torsion-bar spring. The latter is secured at one end in the cylinder head so that it cannot turn, and at the other to a single-arm valve lever coupled to the armature. The lever (10) is coupled to the armature (5) at its free end. The armature with its central disc (6) is coaxial to the stem of the valve (7).
