The engine exhaust system has a small catalytic converter (20) near the engine, and supplied with exhaust gases via a separate manifold (14) and separate control valves (6,7,8,9). A larger converter (27) is linked to the engine via a second manifold (15) and second set of control valves (10,11,12,13). During engine warm-up the gases are processed first in the small converter and then in the larger to ensure optimum treatment. When the engine/converters are hot the larger converter takes over most of the processing. The small converter is electrically heated (21) to ensure rapid warm-up to the operating condition. The two sets of valves are controlled by regulating cams and via a temp. control. ADVANTAGE - Efficient exhaust treatment during cold start; less emission products.
