The invention relates to a combustion process, e.g., for waste combustion units, in which fuel is burned with feeding of combustion air, which basically consists of ambient air enriched with oxygen. It is proposed to feed combustion air with an increased oxygen portion relative to the ambient air only to those phases of the combustion process in which basically the entire amount of oxygen is consumed except for a random residual amount to be preset. The combustion air with increased oxygen content is thus specifically introduced corresponding to the actual requirements of the combustion process.
