A polymerization catalyst for olefins including styrenic compounds, containing as one component a transition metal compound having two ligands such as a beta -diketone, which comprises: (a) a transition metal compound of general formula (I), wherein M represents titanium, zirconium, hafnium or vanadium; Y<1> and Y<2> represent the same or different halogen atoms or C1 to C10 alkyl groups; and R<1>, R<2> and R<3> represent each hydrogen or a C1 to C10 hydrocarbon group, provided that at least one of them is hydrogen but not all of them are hydrogen at the same time, and (b) an organoaluminum compound, particularly aluminoxane.
