The marking of absorbent material, in particular of ceramic piece goods, should be readable immediately and also after a thermal treatment at temperatures above 400 DEG C. The marking of absorbent material is carried out by applying a cobalt salt solution which can additionally contain a copper salt, where a thermal post-treatment above a temperature of 400 DEG C follows to stabilise the marking.
