A method for automatically determining the configuration of resources on a computer system at the time the computer system is started. The method involves placing a configuration readonly-memory (ROM) on each add-on card placed in the computer system. The configuration ROM contains information such as the card type and identification number, byte lanes used, location of device drivers, the device driver code, etc. The configuration ROM has a format header which is at one of a set of determinable addresses in the computer systems address space. The configuration header contains a field with the offset to a resource directory. The resource directory, in turn, contains a set of entries of resource lists and offsets to those resource lists. Each resource list contains a resource type and other information as required to configure the computer system. A process for reading the format header, resource directory, and resource lists is described. |
