A continuously moving material web (11) is coated with adhesive by an endless belt (6). An intermediate coating is applied to the belt by the applicator (15). The belt then passes through a drying chamber where it is heated by heating elements (24). In addition, a stream of inert gas (33) is directed over the coated surface in the direction opposite to the belt travel. The coating solvent is evaporated and removed by the gas stream. The dried intermediate coating is then transferred from the belt to the continuously moving web.
