The increasing use of zinc as an anti-corrosive agent for steel increases the return of zinc with the scrap charge and the zinc content in the steelworks dusts. For reprocessing, i.e. separation of the zinc content from the iron oxides of these steelworks dusts, there are a number of proposed solutions, of which, however, only a few have gained industrial application. These known processes, however, require a high zinc content of more than about 12% of Zn in the charge material and, in addition, have high investment costs and operating costs. By means of the process according to the invention, however, even steelworks dusts and other steel industry residues with lower zinc contents can be treated by reductive smelting of the charge materials in a melting cyclone and reducing the resulting calcium ferrite slag in a steel converter partially filled with crude iron by the carbon of the crude iron.

|
