A-18220/A Sulfoxides of alkylthiomethylphenols of the disclosure: Sulfoxides of alkylthiomethylphenols of the formula I in which R1 is hydrogen, C1-C20alkyl, C2-C18alkenyl, C5-C7cycloalkyl, C5-C7cyclo-alkenyl, phenyl or C7-C9phenylalkyl, R2 is hydrogen, C1-C20alkyl, C2-C18alkenyl,C5-C7cycloalkyl, C5-C7cycloalkenyl, phenyl, C7-C9phenylalkyl or a radical -CH2-SO-R5, in which R5 is C8-C20alkyl which may be interrupted by -O-, -S- or-SO- groups, mono- or dihydroxy-substituted C2-C12 alkyl, phenyl, benzyl, -(CH2)nCOOR6 or -CH(CH3)COOR6, in which R6 is C1-C20alkyl and n is 1 or 2, R3 is hydrogen or a group -CH2-SO-R5, in which R5 is as defined above, and R4 has the same meanings as R2, with the proviso that only one of the radicals R2, R3 or R4 is the group -CH2-SO-R5 and that, if R4 is-CH2-SO-R5 and R1 and R2 are simultaneously tert-butyl or tert-amyl, R5 is not C8-C14alkyl, or mixtures of these compounds with the corresponding non-oxidised compounds are suitable for stabilising organic materials which are sensitive to oxidative, thermal and/or light-induced degradation.
