PRINTING APPARATUS AND PROCESS

A coating from a transfer foil 18 is applied to a material to be printed such as individual shoots or a strip of labels 11. The transfer foil and the material to be printed are brought together by heated nip rollers 17. A thermoplastic adhesive or an adhesive toner is applied to the material to be printed by a printer 13 controlled by a computer 14 in a predetermined pattern corresponding to an electronically stored digital image. The coating is transferred only to those parts of the material to be printed upon which adhesive has previously been printed. First and second printers may provide variable and fixed adhesive patterns. A printer 21 and laminator 22 may additionally print data on and laminate the coated material.
