Process for the preparation of polyether-substituted Mannich bases which can be used as ash-free dispersants for fuels and lubricants

It has been discovered that the reaction products in which polyethers are obtained from Mannich bases which contain substituted phenol are effective ash-free dispersants and detergents for fuels and lubricants. The products of the reaction according to the invention are obtained: 1. by reacting phenol or a C1 up to approximately C40 alkyl phenol with a primary or secondary amine and a C1 to approximately C30 aldehyde, 2. then causing the intermediate product from stage 1 to react with an alkali metal or a salt of an alkali metal, and 3. then causing the product from stage 2 to react with a C2 to approximately C8 alkylene epoxide or mixtures thereof so as to obtain a polyether-substituted Mannich base.
