PURPOSE:To regenerate a perfluorocarbon-based cation exchange membrane whose performance has been deteriorated in a short time by feeding a specified org. acid soln. into the anode chamber of an electrolytic cell without detaching the cation exchange membrane from the cell. CONSTITUTION:When a perfluorocarbon-based cation exchange membrane is used in the electrolysis of an aq. alkali chloride soln. by an ion exchange membrane method in an electrolytic cell and the performance is deteriorated, a soln. of pH >1 contg. acid other than <=2c monocarboxlic acids is fed into the anode chamber of the cell without detaching the membrane from the cell. Circuit acid, tartaric acid, malonic acid, adipic or oxalic acid, especially citric acid is preferably used as the org. acid because of high membrane regenerating ability. The cation exchange membrane whose performance has been deteriorated can be regenerated in a short time. |
