A composition containing a mixture of pulverulent inorganic materials and a binder intended to give rise to setting inside hollow metallic structures is introduced inside the said structures. Use is made of a composition containing, moreover, at least one inorganic compound contributing molecules of water of crystallisation, the composition is introduced inside the said structures in the substantially dry state so that it flows like a dry product, and setting of the binder is brought about by moderate heating of the said hollow metallic structures, at least a part of the said inorganic compound contributing molecules of water of crystallisation not decomposing during this heating. Use, in particular, for increasing the strength of hollow metallic structures in the event of fire.
