Each headlamp unit (1) is pivotable about a horizontal axis by a positioning motor (4) with a threaded shaft (5). Deviations from a horizontal position are signalled by a sensor (2). For gradient compensation an identical sensor (18) may be installed on an unsprung portion (17) of the bodywork, and both sensors (2,18) wired to a processing circuit. They are required to recognise only three possible attitudes, level, and inclined forwards or backwards. ADVANTAGE - Range of beams easily maintained throughout changes in loading of vehicle, with simple spirit-level protected from environmental influences.
