PURPOSE:To prevent a coat from being applied in a thick film at the start by a method wherein a coating plate is moved back by rotation or slidable movement to allow a free-flowing liq. coating material to run along a baffle plate with a dogleg cross section provided at the end of the coating plate and the coat is thereafter applied so as to reach a web. CONSTITUTION:Before coat application, a rectangular flat coating plate 8 is inserted into a curtain membrane 5 at an elevation angle delta thereto in such a manner as to block the curtain membrane and a liq. coating material is collected along the coating plate 8 into a recovery tank 21. At the time of the coat application, the coating plate 8 is slidably moved along the angle delta or moved back by rotation on a suitable pivot. Since free-flowing coating material on the curtain membrane 5 moves along a dogleg baffle plate at the end of the coating plate, the coating material reaches a coating point of a web without wetting the lower part of the coating plate and retains the amt. of the liq. at a minimum upon start of the coat application. Therefore, the bead of the curtain membrane is stabilized and a thick film-free coating becomes possible.
