Carboxyphosphane oxides of formulae (I)-(III), some of which are novel cpds., are used as photoinitiators in the high-energy irradiation hardening of radically-polymerisable moulding compsns., coatings or printing inks. X and Y = O or S, R1 and R2 and R4 = opt. substd. aromatic, opt. substd. 1-6C alkyl or opt. substd. 5-8C cycloalkyl or R1 and R2 opt. together form opt. substd. 4-6C alkylene, R3 and R5 = opt. substd. (hetero)aromatic, which is opt. conjugatively bonded via olefinic double bond(s) or an aliphatic gp. capable of radical formation, and R6 = 1-10C alkylene, trans-ethenylene or arylene. The novel cpds. are (a) of formula (III) as defined above, (b) those of formula (I) where R3 = thiophenol residue, biphenyl, naphthyl, diphenyl hydroxymethyl, -C6H4(COR10), -C6H2(R11)3, -CH=CH-C6H5-n(R9)n (where n = 1, 2 or 3), furyl, thiophenyl, pyrrolyl, pyridinyl or a gp. of formula (IV) or (V), with R9 = 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, halogen, NO2, amino, OH, SH, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl (with 1-4C in the alkyl gp.) or carboxamide, R10 = Ph, opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl and R11 = H or as for R9 and (c) those of formula (II) where X = O or S, R4 = Me or Ph, R3 and R5 = -C6H2(R12)3 or C6H5n(OH)n, where R12 = H or as for R9 and n = 2 or 3. USE/ADVANTAGE - Stable and non-discolouring and can be used for hardening pigmented systems. Pref. used in amts. of 0.001-20 wt.% of the polymerisable compsn. and can be used together with conventional photoinitiators and/or 0.1-15 wt.% amine accelerators. Use is pref. with UV-curable compsns. based on allyl cpds. (e.g. diallyl phthalate), (meth)acrylates . epoxy (meth)acrylates) or vinyl cpds. (DVB or styrenes). (-pp)
