Prodn. of moulded and fired articles from mixts. of 60-40 wt.% Al2O3 and 40-60 wt.% ZrO2 is carried out by (a) subjecting Al2O3 and ZrO2 starting materials of at least 99.0% purity to fine grinding to below 90 microns particle size or, if the starting materials are already below this particle size, to intimate mixing; (b) subjecting the mixt. to granulation or slurrying with water, moulding and then drying; (c) firing the mouldings at 1400-1800 deg.C; and (d) cooling slowly so the ZrO2 transforms (almost) completely into the monoclinic phase. An article produced by the process, is also claimed.
