Electrode arrangement for a gas producing electrolytic cell, esp. monopolar membrane cells consists of vertically arranged and horizontally split plate electrodes (2) in a frame (1) with flat structured perforated pre-electrodes (6) spot welded (7) to the side of the plate electrodes facing the cell membrane. The pre-electrodes are treated parallel to the face of the plate electrodes. The distance between the plate electrodes and the pre-electrodes is 1-5 mm, pref. 1.5-2.5. The pre-electrode may be made of perforated sheet, strip metal or wire mass or individual wire structure. The plate electrodes may be arranged horizontally. The plate electrodes of one polarity may be horizontally arranged while the plate electrodes of the counter electrodes are vertically arranged. The upper edges (3) of the plate electrodes are angularly shaped. A side rail (4) has electrical contact points (5) and the electrolyte is fed into the frame via perforated tube (8).
