Sequential polymers are of idealised formula (I): r=1-20 -A-= a polymer, of a cyclic carbonate of formula (II) and/or (III); and -B-= a polymer of a lactone of formula (IV): X= a middle section, contg. both (II) and/or (III) and also (IV) in polymerised form, in which the concn. of (II) and/(or) (III) gps. decreases continuously towards -B- and the concn. of (IV) gps. decreases continuously towards -A- (tapered structure); m, n, p and q independently = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6; n+m = at least 1 in (II) and in (IV); n+p and m+q= at least 1 in (III); R1 and R2 = H, 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl or 1-6C alk(en)yloxy-1-6C alkyl, esp. H, Me or Et.
