The 2-stroke diesel engine with a particle filter (4) or catalyser has a regulator (7) for regulating the quantity of purging air in dependane on the engine load, the ratio of the purging air vol to the cylinder stroke space being greater than 1 at full load and less than 1 under partial loading and idling. Pref. the regulation (7) of the purging air is effected directly or indirectly via the fuel injection quantity regulation (3). Both controlled by an electronic unit (10). A heat exchanger (5) allows pre-heating of the purging air in the low load range via the engine exhaust gases. ADVANTAGE- Raises exhaust gas temp for use of particle filter or catalyser over wider engine operating range.
