The conveying arrangement (1) comprises a vibration conveyor (16) followed by a lengthwise conveyor (17), the former feeding the latter so that the stones arrive in a prearranged correct position. A first horizontal carriage (6) is assigned to the end of the conveyor (17). A first clamp (4) and measuring arrangement (5) are mounted on this carriage. This clamp holds a single diamond (2) between fixed and movable jaws. The movable jaw is operated by a lifting magnet. The measuring arrangement has a drive which can be in the form of a lifting magnet or a servomotor and a measurement value pick-up. After measurement, the carriage conveys the diamond to a second clamp (7) of a second measuring arrangement (8). The first clamp is released only when the second clamp has firmly gripped the diamond. The first measurer can give the width and the second, the length of the diamond. The second clamp and measurer are mounted on a horizontally movable third carriage having a third measurer (10) for recording the height. ADVANTAGE - Rapid yet accurate working.
