PURPOSE:To prepare a polyarylene sulfide under mild conditions at an improved productivity by polymerizing a specific diphenyl disulfide and/or a thiophenol in the presence of a catalyst and an acid while blowing (an) oxygen (-contg. gas) into the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:A diphenyl disulfide of formula I (wherein R<1> to R<8> are each H, halogen, lower alkyl, or lower alkoxy) and/or a thiophenol of formula II (wherein R<9> to R<12> are each the same as R<1>) is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst, pref. a vanadium catalyst, and an acid in a solvent at a temp. from 0 deg.C to the b.p. of the solvent for 0.2-100 hr while blowing (an) oxygen (-contg. gas) into the reaction system, thereby giving a linear polyarylene sulfide having a backbone of formula III and an extremely low degree of crosslinking. |
