According to the invention, a method and arrangements are proposed for connecting optical fibres and for evaluating the connection made. For this, use is made of a joining arrangement 21 of conventional type, by means of which two optical fibres 1 and 3 are joined together by means of heating supplied by an electric arc. This arc is generated between electrode tips 11. A video camera 25 is used to monitor and control the joining sequence and it sends an image of the optical fibres at the moment of fusing together to an evaluation arrangement 27. The evaluation arrangement 27 determines from the image obtained the position of the core in the joined optical fibre by means of automatic image processing. The function thus obtained, which indicates the position, is separated into spectral components by means of Fourier transformation. Of these components, only a central range is retained, and these remaining components are then used to calculate the attenuation. In this way, the curved course of the position function in the vicinity of the join is taken into consideration. <IMAGE> |
