PURPOSE:To obtain a miniature photomagnetic recording and reproducing device and to use a semiconductor laser device, etc., while reducing electric power required for each light emitting source, by using a photomagnetic recording and reproducing head consisting of vertical magnetic field generating elements and a condensing light beams from light sources. CONSTITUTION:A photomagnetic recording and reproducing head 6 is provided which consists of magnetic field generating elements 15 and 16 capable of applying magnetic fields at right angles to the film surface of a vertical-magnetism thin film 3, a condensing element 10 capable of focusing light beams from light emitting sources 7 and 11 on the same area P on the magnetic thin film 3. In recording information, the light beams and >=1 out of the magnetic field generating element 15 are modulated (e.g. PCM modulation of laser light from light emitting source 11) according to an information signal, and thermomagnetic recording is carried out. To reproduce recorded information, the magnetic thin film 3 is irradiated with >=1 light beam with constant intensity and while magnetooptical effect such as Kerr effect is utilized, a polarizer 8, a half-mirror 9, an analyzer 14, a photodetector 13, etc., for example, are used. |
